George Russell will drive for World Champions Mercedes at this week’s 18-inch tyre test in Hungary.

The Mercedes-linked driver has been given the nod to get behind the wheel of the squad’s mule car as part of Pirelli’s test schedule on the new-for-2022 rubber.

Russell made his first public appearance in Mercedes colours during testing at the Hungaroring in 2017 and again drove for the manufacturer at the corresponding running in 2018.

Russell is in contention for Mercedes’ current 2022 vacancy alongside Lewis Hamilton.

He scored his first points for Williams at Sunday’s race at the venue, taking ninth, which became eighth following Sebastian Vettel’s exclusion.

Russell and Mercedes will be in action only on Tuesday while fellow participants Ferrari and McLaren will stay on for a second day on Wednesday.

Regular McLaren racers Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo will split running; Ferrari has yet to communicate its line-up.

Pirelli supplies the run plan for these tests, ensuring no team gains an advantage, with the data shared between all 10 outfits.
