Mercedes junior Frederik Vesti was fastest in FIA Formula 3 qualifying at Paul Ricard.
Vesti, who joined the reigning Formula 1 champions’ junior roster for 2021, will start Sunday’s main race from pole position.
Championship leader Dennis Hauger was second, and less than two tenths slower than Vesti, with Victor Martins, Jack Doohan and Caio Collet next up.
The top 10 was completed by Clement Novalak, Alex Smolyar, Ayumu Iwasa, Juan Manuel Correa and Logan Sargeant.
With the top 12 being reversed for the Race 1 grid, Calan Williams will start from pole ahead of David Schumacher.
The first race of the weekend is on Saturday morning at 10:10 track time.
