Extreme E is seeking alternative venues for its final two rounds of the 2021 season after the events in Brazil and Argentina were called off.

The penultimate round of the championship in Santarem, Brazil, was scheduled to be held on October 23/24, which would then be followed by the finale in Ushuaia, Argentina on December 11/12.

However, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the all-electric off-road series has been forced to postpone its visit to South America until season two.

The regions that will replace the cancelled events of South America have not yet been confirmed, however an option includes the Western Isles in Scotland.

“We’ve been closely monitoring the situation regarding all Extreme E locations for 2021 and have chosen to make this pre-emptive decision on racing in South America this year,” said Extreme E Founder and CEO Alejandro Agag.

“As a new series embarking on our opening Season, our priority is to deliver a five-race calendar of events which are safe and responsible for our global participants, partners and staff to travel to and attend.

“This was not a decision made lightly, however current travel advice and restrictions have also meant we have been unable to visit the race areas in advance to undertake the necessary reconnaissance visits, which are especially vital due to the remote nature of our operations.”

The opening two rounds of the 2021 Extreme E championship have already taken place in Saudi Arabia and Senegal respectively.

2016 Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg’s team Rosberg X Racing leads the Drivers’ and Teams’ standings, holding a 14-point lead over X44 Racing, owned by seven-time F1 title holder Lewis Hamilton.
