Prodrive has partnered with reigning Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton’s X44 Extreme E team which will compete in the inaugural season of the new all-electric off-road championship.

Hamilton’s X44 is one of nine teams competing this year, which will see the series race at remote locations across the world, raising awareness of the environment and the impact global warming is having.

Other teams include an entry by F1 champions Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button. The latter of which is not only a team owner, but also a driver with his JBXE team.

Prodrive will run team X44 at each of the five races, utilising its vast motorsport experience which includes six WRC titles and six Le Mans wins.

“Extreme E is such an exciting and unique concept and I have been fascinated by the project ever since Alejandro launched it almost two years ago,” commented Prodrive chairman and founder David Richards.

“When Lewis then announced his interest in a team it was a great opportunity for Prodrive to help him realise his personal ambitions from the series.”

X44’s drivers include Prodrive-contracted drivers Sébastien Loeb, and fellow Dakar competitor, Cristina Gutiérrez.

The first race of the season is this weekend, taking place in Alula, Saudi Arabia.
