Sergio Perez believes his replacement at Aston Martin for the 2021 Formula 1 season will “have a good time” as he’s joining a team of “pure racers”.

Aston Martin will join the F1 grid this year, replacing the Racing Point team which it has taken over.

Whilst the teams identity will undergo a drastic change, their driver line-up has also been refreshed with four-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel joining from Ferrari.

The German replaces Perez to partner Lance Stroll. That decision initially left Perez without a seat, however over the winter the Mexican signed a deal to replace an underperforming Alex Albon at Red Bull.

Perez believes Aston Martin will be a good fit for Vettel after his recent struggles, which saw him finish a lowly 13th in the championship standings.

“I think Seb has definitely taken a great decision,” Perez told the official Formula 1 website. “He’s coming to a team of pure racers, to a team where he will definitely have a good time.

“He will enjoy it, and most importantly, he will have some good fun. And I have no doubt that the team will be one of the strongest next year so he will definitely have a fantastic car.”

Many have shared their view on the move, including F1 managing director Ross Brawn who said Vettel, despite being a four-time champion, would have big shoes to fill replacing the Sakhir GP winner.

Reacting to those comments, Perez added: “I thought ‘well, big shoes to fill for a four-time world champion is hard to imagine versus a guy who just won a race’. But in a way, that’s Formula 1. Titles and victories don’t mean a lot because it’s so much down to the level of cars that you have in your career.”
