Ricciardo suggests experimenting with Yas Marina layout after dull finale

Daniel Ricciardo (AUS) Renault F1 Team RS20 runs wide. Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Saturday 12th December 2020. Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Daniel Ricciardo has suggested that organisers of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix could experiment with different layouts in the wake of an unenthralling end to the 2020 season.

Ricciardo extended his stint on Hard tyres after the early Safety Car period and built enough of a gap over his opponents to emerge in seventh position.

But action in the 55-lap finale was few and far between, with the top three drivers all converting their grid positions, while 19 of the 20 drivers reached the finish.

The pole-sitter has gone on to win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in each of the last six years.

“Knowing that my pace was strong and that I was creating that gap, that kept me excited,” said Ricciardo on his race.

“It was like a long time trial that I was enduring. So personally it was a fairly fun race for me, although not a whole lot of action with other guys.

“It is a shame because it is such a great venue, and I certainly do not want to talk the place down because I want to keep coming back here because it is amazing.

“But maybe we could play around with the layouts, I know there is a few alternatives around here.

“Because unfortunately on Sunday it is tricky, it is sometimes a bit grim from an entertainment point of view.”

Ricciardo and Renault both finished fifth in their respective championships at the end of their second, and final, season together.

“I feel fulfilled to be honest,” he said. “I felt it coming into the track actually. It was like this is it. I do.

“This year although shortened it was such a chaotic year. But actually a really strong one.

“I’m really pleased how far we’ve come, both myself and the team, and fifth in the drivers’ championship, obviously there is no reward for that, but I think it speaks for itself in the turnaround we made this year.”

How about we just don’t ever use Abu Dhabi as a season finisher ever again?

We beg, change the layout, or swap it out from the last race of the season!
