Perez, Magnussen to take grid penalties in Abu Dhabi

Sergio Perez and Kevin Magnussen are set to start this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from the back of the grid after taking on fresh Power Unit components.

Perez, who ran with an old engine en route to his maiden F1 win last weekend in Bahrain, has had a new internal combustion engine, turbocharger and MGU-H fitted to his car.

It marks the fourth of each component used this season, exceeding the limit of the number of replacements that can be fitted penalty-free across a campaign.

The Mexican climbed from the back to the head of the field last Sunday, setting a new record for the most number of career races completed before earning a first victory.

Perez’s grid penalty will come as a blow to Racing Point, who is currently heading McLaren by 10 points in the battle for third in the Constructors’ Championship.

Haas’ Kevin Magnussen, who will leave the American team at the conclusion of the Abu Dhabi weekend, is set to join Perez at the back of the starting grid.

A new Energy Store and Control Electronics has been fitted to his car, the third of each component across the season.

Haas also took a Power Unit penalty last weekend for debutant Pietro Fittipaldi, who remains with the team this weekend in place of the injured Romain Grosjean.
