Ricciardo to discuss Grosjean crash replays with F1

Daniel Ricciardo (AUS) Renault F1 Team. Sakhir Grand Prix, Thursday 3rd December 2020. Sakhir, Bahrain.

Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo says he will meet with Formula 1 chiefs to discuss the number of times the replay of Romain Grosjean’s crash was shown on the world feed.

Grosjean suffered a high-speed accident at the start of last weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix, in which his car was split in two, before it caught fire.

Grosjean extricated himself from the wreckage and he was shown sitting in the Medical Car, at which point replays of the accident were shown on the world feed.

But Ricciardo expressed his frustration post-race at the number of times the footage was repeated during the 90-minute delay that ensued before the restart.

Ahead of this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix Ricciardo emphasised that his view has not changed and said he was thanked by Grosjean’s wife Marion for his comments.

“There was the offer [from Formula 1] and I will take that offer up today,” said Ricciardo.

“After the race I was heated but also had to dissect my own race and I did not feel like it was the right time.

“So I will hear them out today and hear the reasons and go from there so obviously I’m happy to hear and be educated.

“For me my stance is not changed, I felt like once that showed it once and we had seen him jump out and get into the medical car. I felt like that was all we needed to see.

“I felt like the constant replays, it was a lot, and I felt like that could have waited. At the time I said until tomorrow, but even until after the race. We still had a race to do.

“I felt that it was inconsiderate to his family, but also it was a distraction because every time every time we went into the garage and try to find out what was happening the only thing that was on was endless replays.

“I bumped into Romain’s wife and she appreciated my comments. So that is all the validation that I needed.”

Ricciardo also suggested that there was the risk Grosjean could have suffered further injuries that may not have been obvious upon first glance.

“It was 54G or something, the impact, and from my understanding, don’t get me wrong I’m no doctor, there could be further implications maybe later that evening internally,” he said.

“It just feels like it was a bit abused. I think that was it. It was showed, I did not feel like I did not feel like it needed to be showed that many times as it as it was, at least in that moment.

“I do not have a mega suggestion, but I feel they could fill [the time delay] with less flames and something else.”
