F2 heading to Jeddah, F3 to conclude in Austin, as split calendars revealed

Formula 2 and Formula 3 have revealed their split calendars under the revised format that will be introduced in 2021.

The categories are part of the same paddock with Formula 2 typically joining Formula 1 at 12 grands prix, with Formula 3 in action at eight or nine rounds.

But from 2021 onwards, in a bid to cut costs, each category will run at separate Formula 1 events and instead hold three races per round rather than the current two.

Formula 2’s 2021 season will open in Bahrain, alongside Formula 1’s second event, and will then travel to Monaco, Azerbaijan and Britain across the opening half of the season.

Its campaign will resume after the summer break, in Italy in mid-September, prior to a trip to Russia, concluding with back-to-back events at new-for-2021 Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi.

Formula 3 will remain dormant until May, when its season gets underway in Spain, ahead of events in France, Austria and Hungary.

The tertiary season will hold back-to-back rounds in Belgium and the Netherlands and will travel to North America for the first time in order to conclude its seven-event season at the Circuit of the Americas.

“As announced last week, one of our costs control measures for 2021 is to limit the number of rounds which will automatically lessen the teams’ budget,” said Bruno Michel, CEO of both series.

“But thanks to F1 and the FIA’s support, we will now have three races per event.

“The 2021 F2 provisional calendar is a mixture of European and overseas circuits, with venues that have always been very popular amongst the drivers and the fans alike.

“The addition of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia makes it all the more exciting.

“I’m quite interested to see the F3 cars run at Zandvoort and Austin. These are two exciting new venues for us.

“We will also go back to Le Castellet where we saw great racing in previous years. F3 may no longer be racing on the same weekends as F2, I am pleased to confirm that all F3 events will take place alongside Formula 1.”
