Callum Ilott stuck his UNI-Virtuosi on pole position for the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race at Monza, as four championship points close the gap between the Brit and Robert Shwartzman.
The Brit was sitting in seventh after the first run but was able to pull out a 1:31.929, three hundredths of a second over Yuki Tsunoda on the front row.
Luca Ghiotto qualified third for his home round in the Hitech ahead of Christian Lundgaard. Williams Academy driver Roy Nissany achieved his best F2 qualifying with fifth.
Niktia Mazepin will start sixth in front of Mick Schumacher, who had spun into the barriers on the exit of the Ascari chicane in the last couple of minutes and bringing the session to a premature end. The German will start seventh as a result.
Jehan Daruvala, Louis Deletraz and Dan Ticktum make up the top ten but Robert Shwartzman has it all to do from 26th and over six tenths off the pace.
The Russian’s margin over Ilott has been narrowed down to just six points going into the first F2 race of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.
The Feature Race begins on Saturday afternoon 15:45 BST.
