IndyCar is in the final stages of rescheduling the doubleheader at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the weekend of September 12, and is just waiting to make sure the local health situation will allow the races to go ahead before confirming the event.
The dual races were scheduled for earlier this month on August 8 and 9, until they were indefinitely delayed just one week before the series was set to take on the 2.258-mile circuit. Changes to the local situation regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic led to the delay, and will be a key factor in confirming the new date next month.
Mid-Ohio has been allowing fans to attend races held at the facility in recent months, but it has not been confirmed whether fans will be able to attend the rescheduled IndyCar race once it’s finalized.
“We’d like to be there the second week of September for a doubleheader,” said Mark Miles, Penske Entertainment Corporation CEO.
“Like all of these decisions, it’s going to be driven by the situation on the ground in Ohio. It will probably be something that we won’t know until we get closer to the end of August period.
“The teams are ready to go. We’d like to be there. NBC has saved some time for us. Hopefully we’ll have a doubleheader at Mid-Ohio in mid-September.”
Current points leader Scott Dixon has won the most IndyCar races at Mid-Ohio of any driver, having taken home the trophy six times in the past thirteen years, including last year.
This year’s shuffled schedule currently has a break for the entire month of September, leaving plenty of space to fit the additional set of races in and keep the 2020 schedule at the desired 14 race length. IndyCar has visited the historic track in Lexington, Ohio almost every year since 1970.
This Sunday IndyCar races in the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500, followed by a double-header at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway the following weekend.
