IndyCar has confirmed a full field of 33 cars has secured entry into the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 on August 23.
With the maximum number of entries filled with no extras, no traditional ‘Bump Day’ proceedings will take place on the second day of qualifying.
This will mean all 33 drivers will start the race – should their cars survive the practice sessions in the lead up to the event.
The prestigious event was set to host a limited number of the fans, but last week those plans were abandoned due to the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning the race will be held behind closed doors for the very first time.
Eight former winners of the event will take part including three-time victor Helio Castroneves as he continues to seek a fourth victory at the Brickyard to equal A.J. Foyt and Rick Mears.
Also, as part of his ‘Last Lap’ tour Tony Kanaan will also participate in what could be his final Indy 500.
Five rookies also make the field with Oliver Askew, Dalton Kellett, Alex Palou and Rinus VeeKay. Pato O’Ward is still considered a rookie despite having taken part driven the oval, due to being bumped out of qualifying in 2019.
Fernando Alonso will also be a part of the field in the No.66 Ruoff Arrow McLaren SP entry as he attempts the event for the third time as his bids to join 1966 Indy 500 winner Graham Hill as winners of motorsport’s unofficial ‘Triple Crown’
There will be three practice days from August 12-14, with qualifying on Saturday, August 15 with the Fast-Nine shootout for pole position on the Sunday.
Final Practice – otherwise known as ‘Carb Day’ will take place on Friday, August 21 and has also been expanded from one hour to two.
The green flag for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 is set to drop at 14:30 local time on Sunday August 23.
