Logan Sargeant dominated to win his first FIA Formula 3 race at Silverstone, which means the American has moved to the head of the championship standings.
The PREMA driver was in full command from pole position and untroubled from start to finish.
Jake Hughes, who had achieved his best qualifying performance of the season for HWA Racelab in third, managed to get a good start which saw him overhaul Liam Lawson ahead. The Brit was able to move into second, where he would remain for the rest of the race.
Lawson was third ahead of Frederik Vesti, David Beckmann and Theo Pourchaire.
Oscar Piastri’s seventh place means he falls six points behind Sargeant in the race for the title. Bent Viscaal dropped behind the Australian and Pourchaire to cross the line in eighth, with Clement Novalak in ninth for Carlin.
Lirim Zendeli crossed the line in tenth and on reverse-grid pole for the second race of the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix weekend. Liam Lawson also picked up the two points for the fastest lap.
Race 2 begins on Sunday morning at 08:45 BST.
