Alexander Albon has revealed that Red Bull wanted an experienced engineer in order to help the team get on top of its tricky RB16.

It was announced earlier this week that Simon Rennie will return to the role of Race Engineer, having been in the position at Red Bull from 2013 to 2018, and previously at Renault.

Rennie returned to a non-travelling position after 2018, coinciding with Daniel Ricciardo’s departure, with Mike Lugg taking over the role for Ricciardo’s replacement Pierre Gasly and then mid-2019 recruit Albon.

Red Bull holds second in the Constructors’ Championship but accepted in Hungary that its RB16 has shown signs of inconsistency, making it hard for Albon and Max Verstappen to drive.

“Firstly there are no issues with Mike, my previous engineer,” Albon clarified ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix.

“Obviously right now the car is tricky to drive right now and the team’s choice was that we need some experience and Simon brings that.

“He’s been in Formula 1 for a very long time now and with that being said obviously he understands F1 and he will hopefully point us in the right direction.

“I’ve already worked with Simon beforehand. We’ve done a test in Barcelona last year. Also Simon’s in charge of a lot of the sim duties that we do back at Milton Keynes so I see him a fair bit.”
