Italian GP organisers confirm F1 race will take place with no spectators

The Italian Grand Prix will be held behind closed doors, organisers have confirmed, meaning no spectators will be allowed access to the Formula 1 race.

This reflects the same policy for the opening three races of the season and the next handful of races in Britain, Spain and Belgium.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Formula 1 has been forced to implement strict safety protocols in order to satisfy local governments that it is safe to host a race weekend, with many governments stipulating that large gatherings are prohibited.

Monza, which will host the Italian GP on September 6, had hoped to allow a limited number of spectators, but on Wednesday confirmed to ticket holders that they would be entitled to a refund or deferment.

“The 2020 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza from 4-6 September will take place behind closed doors, i.e. without spectators,” a statement from the circuit said.

“Tickets already purchased will be refunded for the full value of the face price shown on them.”

It’s expected however that the Tuscan GP, to be held at Ferrari’s Mugello circuit, will grant access to a limited number of fans, whist Russia and Portugal have confirmed plans to open grandstands.
