Racing Point: Both drivers contracted, but ‘watch this space’

(L to R): Sergio Perez (MEX) Racing Point F1 Team and Lance Stroll (CDN) Racing Point F1 Team. Hungarian Grand Prix, Thursday 16th July 2020. Budapest, Hungary.

Racing Point team boss Otmar Szafnauer says the squad is “happy” with its current Formula 1 driver line-up but nonetheless left the door open to a change for 2021.

Racing Point confirmed in mid-2019 that Sergio Perez had signed a contract through 2022 while Lance Stroll, son of team owner Lawrence, is on a long-term deal.

But four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel is understood to be in contention for a 2021 seat and revealed on Thursday that “loose talks” had taken place.

Responding to the developments, Szafnauer on Friday said: “They’re both contracted and we’re happy with the drivers we have.

“It is the silly season already, which I just can’t fathom as we’ve only done two races and we’re already taking about driver changes, but we’re happy with the two we have and they’re contracted.”

He added that: “It’s tough to predict the future, like I said what they need to do is do the best they can, they’re contracted. Watch this space, we’ll see where we go.

“Our intention is never to not honour our contracts.”

On when a decision could be made he said: “There’s no timeline, like I said, we’ve had two races, we’re in our third of the season, and it’s silly season already, so there’s no time-bound decision making process.”
