McLaren’s Lando Norris will carry a three-place grid penalty into this weekend’s Formula 1 Styrian Grand Prix after passing a rival under yellow flag conditions in FP1.

Williams’ Nicholas Latifi came to a halt and parked his FW43 on the grass exiting Turn 4, prompting the yellow flags to be waved.

While Norris backed off from his push lap he nonetheless passed AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly through the area where the yellow flags were being waved.

Stewards summoned Norris and determined that “on-board footage clearly shows that driver of Car 4 [Norris] passed Car 10 [Gasly] while yellow light panels were clearly visible and yellow flags were shown.”

He has been dealt a three-place grid penalty as a consequence.

Norris currently holds third place in the Drivers’ Championship after claiming his maiden Formula 1 podium finish at the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix.

He qualified fourth at the Red Bull Ring last weekend.
