Ferrari will run its 2018 Formula 1 car at prospective grand prix venue Mugello on Tuesday, with both Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel running.

Several Formula 1 teams have already carried out on-track action as part of the build-up to the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix next weekend.

Formula 1 teams are allocated two days of running in current-year cars, in which on-track activity is limited to 100km, but are also permitted to field two-year-old cars with fewer restrictions.

Mercedes and Renault have recently carried out running in 2018 cars, at Silverstone and Spielberg respectively, in order to practice new social distancing measures and to get drivers back up to speed.

Leclerc and Vettel will share running in the race-winning SF71H on Tuesday at the Tuscan venue, which is owned by the manufacturer.

Leclerc got behind the wheel of this year’s SF1000 for a demonstration run in Maranello last Thursday while for Vettel it will be his first outing for Ferrari since confirming his departure at the end of 2020.

The test day also ostensibly provides Ferrari with the opportunity to collect promotional footage of its Formula 1 car at Mugello, which is in line to host a grand prix in September.

Formula 1 chiefs have already outlined an eight-race schedule for July, August and early September, and remain confident of holding events in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, finishing in mid-December.

But amid uncertainty over the coronavirus pandemic and the difficulty of arranging worldwide travel it is thought likely that further events will be held in Europe through the autumn.

Mugello is among several venues under consideration and is edging towards a deal that would result in a grand prix being held in mid-September, a week after the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
