Lucas Auer and Kyle Kirkwood will form BMW i Andretti Motorsport’s rookie line-up for Formula E’s Marrakesh test.
Neither Auer or Kirkwood have driven fully-electric racing machinery before and in preparation for driving the German marque’s iFE.20, have been performing extensive simulator work at its Munich base.
Auer – who will complete a DTM test for BMW next month at Monza – spent 2019 racing in various single-seater and GT categories following Mercedes’ DTM pull-out at the close of 2018.
“It goes without saying that my number one priority is the DTM, and I can hardly wait to take to the track for the first time in the BMW M4 DTM at Monza,” said the 25-year-old Austrian.
“But until then, the Formula E test is a fantastic opportunity to learn something totally new for me. The preparation in the simulator has already made me very curious. I’m excited to see how the car will feel on the track in Marrakesh.”
Kirkwood, 21, is a new driver on the Andretti Autosport roster for 2020 and as such, will compete in the North American Indy Lights Championship.
“As with Lucas and the DTM, the Indy Cars are my top priority at the moment, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to test a car as technologically advanced as the BMW iFE.20,” added Kirkwood.
“The simulator gave me an impression of how complex the car is to drive. It will be a huge challenge and I will have to learn a lot, but I’m really looking forward to it.”
