Formula 1 will return to South Africa this year after confirming details for a Fan Festival in Johannesburg.

Formula 1 has not visited the continent of Africa since the last of 23 championship grands prix was held at Kyalami in 1993.

Championship officials have been evaluating whether a return to a renovated Kyalami is feasible, and on Thursday confirmed plans for a Fan Festival in South Africa next month.

Mercedes, Red Bull and Renault will bring Formula 1 machinery to demonstrate, with Valtteri Bottas confirmed as a participant.

The event will take place in the Sandton district of Johannesburg on March 29.

South Africa’s only Formula 1 champion, Jody Scheckter, will also be present and is set to demonstrate the Ferrari 312T4 with which he won the 1979 title.

“We are excited to announce that F1 will be heading to South Africa this season, with the Heineken F1 Joburg festival,” said F1’s Director of Marketing and Communications Ellie Norman.

“South Africa has a very special place in Formula 1 history and we remain committed to returning to South Africa in the future.

“The festival will be an incredible opportunity for the people of Johannesburg to see F1 up close and personal, with live car runs, fan experiences and incredible live music acts.”
