Red Bull Formula 1 junior Juri Vips will compete in the Japan-based Super Formula championship this season.

Vips joined Red Bull’s young driver scheme at the end of 2018 and last season placed fourth in the reformed FIA Formula 3 Championship.

Hitech racer Vips was the highest-placed non-Prema driver in the standings, taking three wins, before securing pole position and the runner-up spot at the Macau Grand Prix.

Vips had been widely expected to join Super Formula for 2020 and on Friday it was confirmed that the Estonian will race for Team Mugen.

The 19-year-old follows in the path of former Red Bull junior drivers Pierre Gasly and Dan Ticktum.

Gasly finished runner-up in the 2017 championship with Mugen, securing promotion to Formula 1 in the process, though Ticktum’s venture lasted only three events in 2019 before he was dropped.
