Marcus Armstrong dominates in Hungary to take maiden Formula 3 win

Marcus Armstrong charged to a dominant maiden win in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in Hungary, beating Leonardo Pulcini to the chequered flag.

After finishing in eighth place in Saturday's feature race, the Kiwi started from pole position for the reverse grid 22-lap sprint race.

Securing a strong start from pole position, Armstrong led the field of 30 into Turn 1, holding off second-placed starter Pulcini into the right-hander.

The trailing Italian challenged Armstrong into Turn 2, attempting to carve a route around the Prema Racing driver to secure the inside line for Turn 3, desperate to take the lead.

This is something that Pulcini ultimately failed to do, getting squeezed by Armstrong after momentary contact.

Powering ahead, Armstrong set the early pace in the race, securing the fastest lap on his second tour of the circuit to quickly open up a small lead.

Pulcini did not have the pace to challenge Armstrong, leaving the Ferrari junior driver to take his maiden Formula 3 win by over 10 seconds.

Settling for second, Pulcini joined Armstrong on the podium to stand on the rostrum for the second time this season.

The battle for third was an intense affair, with Felipe Drugovich battling directly against Robert Schwartzman for the final step of the podium.

Holding Schwartzman at an arm's length, the Brazilian was set to take his first podium of 2019 before the pair made contact.

Picking up a puncture, Drugovich quickly fell through the field while front wing damage for Schwartzman saw the Russian slowly drop out of podium contention and out of the points.

This allowed Juri Vips to move into the top three before getting overtaken by HWA's Jake Hughes on lap 19 as the Briton secured a second consecutive podium finish.

Missing out on the podium, Vips was fourth while Race 1 winner Christian Lundgaard completed the top five.

Yuki Tsunoda finished in sixth place, closely followed by Jehan Daruvala and Logan Sargeant who completed the points-paying positions in eighth.
