Lorenzo Baldassarri and Augusto Fernandez will remain with the Pons Moto 2 squad for 2020, the Spanish team has announced.

The pair currently sit fourth and third respectively in the Moto2 riders’ standings heading into this weekend’s Czech grand prix at Brno, having taken four wins between them.

Baldassarri led the championship early on as he won three of the first four races, but has suffered a barren run since, slipping to fourth in the points and 39 points behind leader Alex Marquez with ten races remaining.

The Italian is contesting his sixth full-time campaign in Moto2 this year, having managed a best championship placing of fifth with Pons last year, as well as notching up a total of five victories- his first coming in the 2016 San Marino GP when he competed for the Forward Racing squad.

Fernandez meanwhile has impressed in his first full intermediate class campaign, having completed partial seasons with Speed Up and Pons in 2017 and ’18 respectively, scoring his first victory in the Dutch TT at Assen and leading his more experienced team-mate by five points in the championship.

Baldassarri was rumoured to be one of the front runners to make the step up to MotoGP with the Avintia Ducati team next year, but his extended stay in Moto2 hints towards possible graduations for either championship leader Marquez or SAG Racing’s Remy Gardner.
