Six-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier has joined the new Extreme E electric off-road series to advise ion sporting matters.

Ogier, who is second in the WRC standings after his return to Citroen, will also serve as a brand ambassador for the series.

Ogier will "advise and support on everything from the sporting and technical regulations to potential event locations and the design of the Extreme E E-SUV during its R and D programme."

Ogier will also drive the E-SUV Odyssey 21, which was unveiled earlier this month, before it is delivered to teams early in 2020.

"I was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed [July 5-7] and saw the car for the first time," Ogier said. "I can't wait to get working with the Extreme E team.

"The sporting aspect is compelling with Extreme E and the head-to-head format is always thrilling – it's like what we see with the super-special stages in rallying, which the fans always love. I will be working with the organisers to make sure we deliver the best experience for the fans and best challenge for driver. There will be the ability to raise awareness among a global audience of the issues that face many environments around the world due to climate change and human interference. I am sure it can be a powerful tool in driving change and that notion is something very close to my heart."

Alejandro Agag, the founder and CEO of the ABB FIA Formula E championship that will operate the new off-road series, said it was an honour to have Ogier.

"He is among the most talented drivers in the history of motorsport and rallying," Agag added. "Counting on his input, support and advice throughout the development of Extreme E will prove to be invaluable. We couldn't have a better man on-board. Having Sebastien involved from this early stage is truly an honour and a huge endorsement of what we're doing with the series."

Several teams have recently revealed their intention to compete in Extreme E, including HWA AG and ABT Sportsline.
