Carlin Racing has announced Sage Karam will take over the #31 entry for the next IndyCar race in Toronto, in place of Patricio O'Ward.

Red Bull junior O'Ward had been unavailable to participate in Canada event due to his new commitments in the Japan-based Super Formula series, in which he has replaced Daniel Ticktum, who has been dropped by the energy drinks giant.

Karam's Toronto outing will be his second start of the IndyCar season after taking part in the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.

The American driver had to qualify through 'Bump Day' and was one of the drivers who helped push out McLaren's Fernando Alonso from the event. Karam eventually finished 19th after starting from 31st on the grid.

"We’ve obviously been following Sage’s career closely since he won the Indy Lights Championship in 2013 and he’s done a really great job," said Team Principal, Trevor Carlin. "I think he’ll be a great addition to the team and a good team-mate for Max [Chilton] this weekend."

"I want to thank everyone at Carlin for giving me the opportunity to compete in an Indy car again in the NTT IndyCar series," added Karam. "I’m extremely excited and grateful to get back behind the wheel on a road course again for the first time since 2015.

"I’m looking forward to the challenge and working closely with everyone on the team to achieve a successful result and take advantage of this incredible opportunity."
