Carlin's Patricio O'Ward has been cleared by medical staff after getting airborne in a heavy crash during practice for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500.
O'Ward was following the #3 Penske of Helio Castroneves into Turn 2 as his car snapped away from him, causing the car to spin towards the outside SAFER barrier.
His #31 car hit the wall nose first and the air got underneath the Dallara chassis, lifting it into the air, but thanks to revisions to the aerokit which involved holes cut into the floor, his car did not roll over, landing the correct way up.
The Red Bull-backed driver was able to climb out of his car unaided and was sent to the infield medical centre where he was given the all clear and subsequently released.
This is the third accident in two days after Felix Rosenqvist's wreck and Fernando Alonso's crash in the #66 McLaren-Chevrolet in Turn 3.
After this incident, @PatricioOWard has been checked, cleared and released from the medical center.
This is the third crash we’ve seen this week, and all three drivers have walked away. Thanks to @DallaraGroup for being great partners 💪💪#INDYCAR // #ThisIsMay pic.twitter.com/Xp8UGzV87Y
