Dragonspeed took its maiden LMP2 victory at last weekend's Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and was aided by the premature red flag that prevented a drive time violation penalty.
Anthony Davidson, Roberto Gonzalez and Pastor Maldonado triumphed for the No. 31 to end Jackie Chan DC Racing's streak of four wins in the secondary division.
Talking to Motorsport Week, Davidson explained that Gonzalez needed one more minute of drive time in racing conditions, but since the field was behind the safety car before the red flag, that didn't seem likely.
"Roberto needed an extra minute of drive time," Davidson said. "You get a one hour fifteen minute window of minimum time, for the drivers, and he was on one hour fourteen."
"So he needed that one extra minute and that would’ve seen us into fourth place if we stopped under racing conditions. So yeah, the red flag came out, that’s what we were kind of hoping for, and that gave us the victory."
Davidson, who won the World Endurance Championship with Toyota in 2014, admitted he struggled in the bad weather that dominated the race.
"One of my more difficult races, definitely, the conditions. Just glad to survive and and to get lucky and the end with the red flag."
"I’ve never driven on slicks in the snow before. That was a new experience, yeah."
"It was just survival today, that’s what it was all about. And we did!"
Yet, when asked if he had ever raced in similar conditions, Davidson replied: "Yeah, I have, I really have. I think, still, 2007 Fuji, Formula One, that was the worst. That was the worst I’ve ever driven in."
