BMW Team RMG's Marco Wittmann will start from pole position for Saturday's DTM Race 1 at Hockenheim, with the German pipping fellow countryman Mike Rockenfeller by just 0.066 seconds in difficult conditions.
Audi Team Phoenix's Rockenfeller fell just shy of Wittmann's pole time and will line up in second ahead of an impressive debut performance from the new squad on the block, Aston Martin R-Motorsport, with Paul di Resta piloting the Vantage to third on the grid, albeit almost a second down.
Although the rain held off during the session, the track remain slippery from a previous shower but it didn't cause too much trouble for the pack, with a sole red flag the result of BMW's Philipp Eng coming to a halt at the end of the pitlane exit, preventing further running until his car was cleared.
With the action swiftly resuming, Wittmann and Rockenfeller exchanged fastest laps before Wittmann eventually moved clear with two minutes remaining: "We already felt strong in the rain yesterday, but it is great that it has worked out with pole," he said after the session.
Audi Team Rosberg's Rene Rast will start fourth ahead of Abt Sportsline's Robin Frijns.
An impressive rookie debut for Jake Dennis sees the British driver start sixth ahead of another rookie in Sheldon van der Linde.
Ferdinand von Habsburg brings up the rear in 17th, ahead of non-runner Eng, having struggled for pace with a best time more than seven seconds adrift.
