Nissan e.dams' Sebastien Buemi has been handed a 10-second time penalty following the Sanya E-Prix after causing collision involving Robin Frijns and Lucas di Grassi in the dying stages of the race.
After starting the sixth race of the season from the pit lane, Buemi fought his way through the field in the 45-minute + 1 lap event, closing in to move into the top 10 positions, fighting against Frijns in the battle for eighth place.
Running into Turn 8 on the penultimate lap of the race, Buemi ran into the back of the Dutchman ahead, with this forcing the Envision Virgin car into the side of di Grassi who subsequently spun, retiring immediately as a result of the damage he sustained.
Gaining from the collision that he had caused, Buemi jumped forward in the overall classification to take sixth place at the chequered flag, only to be penalised by 10 seconds which dropped him to eighth in the final order.
Buemi's drop to eighth sees the promotion of the Mahindra Racing pair of Jerome d'Ambrosio and Pascal Wehrlein to sixth and seventh, with this allowing d'Ambrosio to close in on Antonio Felix da Costa's new-found lead in the Drivers' Championship, with one point separating the pair while the Indian marque is now tied on points with Envision Virgin at the top of the Teams' Standings.
Elsewhere in the field, race winner Jean-Eric Vergne was reprimanded after breaching safety car protocol, failing to keep within 10 lengths of the BMW i8 while team-mate Andre Lotterer was fined €2,000 for speeding under Full Course Yellow conditions after the chequered flag.
Buemi and Audi's Daniel Abt also fell victim to the same penalty as Lotterer, with the prior also receiving a €2,000 fine while the latter was only fined €1,000.
Abt's Audi team-mate di Grassi was also fined €5,000 after leaving his car without the permission of the race director after becoming the victim of the Buemi-Frijns clash in the closing stages of the race, with this action resulting in the subsequent Full Course Yellow.
Hong Kong E-Prix race winner Edoardo Mortara was also handed a drive-through penalty after failing to use Attack Mode twice, with this being converted to a 16-second time penalty which led to Felipe Massa taking his team-mate's place in 10th.
No further action was taken on an incident involving Oliver Rowland and da Costa during the race, with the pair holding onto their second and third place finishes while Stoffel Vandoorne, who ended Sam Bird's race after rear-ending the driver on the opening lap, was also let off the hook.
The ABB FIA Formula E Championship's fifth season of competition will continue in Rome on April 13 as the all-electric single seater series approaches the second half of its present campaign with the start of the European leg of the 2018/19 calendar.
