Short circuit suspected cause of devastating MotoE fire

A short circuit is believed to be the cause of Thursday morning's huge fire which engulfed the MotoE paddock structure situated at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto.

The paddock had been set-up for the first pre-season test of the new all-electric motorbike series.

All 18 Energica Ego motorbikes were destroyed in the devastating blaze, though luckily nobody was injured as it happened during the early hours of the morning.

Although still waiting on an official reason, early indications point towards a short circuit which led to the ignition of the high-density battery charger.

"Although we are awaiting the official conclusion of the investigation by local police, initial evidence regarding the cause of the fire at the E-paddock of the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto on March 14th seems to point to a short circuit as the main cause of the incident," a statement from the organisers confirmed.

"The source of the short circuit has yet to be identified but, once the fire broke out, it ignited the high-density battery which is part of the high-performance charger used at MotoE events.

"The motorbikes were not connected to the charging infrastructure at the time the fire began."

Dorna Sports recently confirmed the MotoE World Cup will still go ahead as planned in 2019, though a new calendar will be confirmed in due course.
