HWA Racelab's Stoffel Vandoorne topped the timesheets in a delayed FP2 session in Ad Diriyah, leading the way into qualifying for Formula E's newest addition to the 2018/19 grid.

Vandoorne, who will make his competitive debut in the all-electric single seater series this weekend, set the timing screens alight in the dying stages of a damp second practice, lapping the 2.495km-long circuit in 1m 18.868s.

Envision Virgin Racing's Sam Bird followed Vandoorne in the order, 0.177s adrift of the Belgian, heading the Nissan e.dams pair of Sebastien Buemi and Oliver Rowland who were fourth and fifth.

Due FP1 being cancelled, the 35-minute session began under controlled conditions, with all 22 drivers completing their opening three laps behind the safety car.

Peeling into the pits with 29 minutes to go, the green flag waved before the session was soon halted after Venturi's Edoardo Mortara became the first victim of the Ad Diriyah walls, crashing his VFE05 machine in Turn 1 after previously having a lairy moment on the entry to Turn 18.

With Mortara running in Group A in Formula E's new revised qualifying format for this weekend, it is unclear as to whether the driver will be able to take part in the session that commences at 11:25 local time.
