On the eve of the fifth season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, the all-electric single seater series could be set to head to South Korea for a potential E-Prix in Seoul.
Reaching an agreement with Formula E, race promoter JSM Holdings has stated its intention to bring the high-adrenaline city centre racing series to the streets of Seoul from 2020 for Season Six.
"I’m extremely excited about the prospect of bringing Formula E to Seoul and this news is a great first step in the right direction," said Formula E founder and CEO Alejandro Agag.
"Korea and Seoul, in particular, is an ideal venue to host an E-Prix and showcase the best that electric racing has to offer.
"Korea is at the forefront of future-facing developments, leading the way with cutting-edge innovations and recognised as a global trend-setter in the automotive and technology sectors – synergies shared with the overarching vision and concept of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.”
The race, which could see Formula E race in Gwanghwamun Square and the City Hall Square, is part of a five-year agreement although this is still subject to approval from city authorities and the FIA World Motorsport Council.
Moon Jae Sik, CEO of JSM Holdings, added: "This event will show the ongoing development of electric vehicle technology from global automotive brands, using the platform of a truly exciting and competitive racing series.
"It’ll also contribute in attracting tourists from China and Japan, where interest towards the growth of clean transportation and motorsport is high.”
With Mercedes and Porsche set to join the Season Six Formula E grid, the championship is set to see further growth while the coming 2018/19 season will commence on December 15 with the inaugural Ad Diriyah E-Prix.
