Mercedes ‘understands’ Mexico problems, aim to bounce back in Brazil – Toto Wolff

Mercedes say they have made progress in understanding why they lacked performance in Mexico where 2018 champion Lewis Hamilton and team-mate Valtteri Bottas struggled to keep up with both Red Bull and Ferrari.

Hamilton went on to finish fourth – enough to clinch the title – and almost a lap down on race winner Max Verstappen, but was forced to make two stops in a race many expected would see just the one, whilst Bottas, fifth and lapped, made three stops as the pair struggled with degradation.

Wolff described the weekend as "bittersweet" given the high of clinching another drivers' title, but in contrast the low of dropping points to Ferrari with whom they are locked in a fairly close fight for the Constructors' Championship.

Wolff says they've analysed their performance and now better understand the cause of their problems and are therefore hopeful of bouncing back in Brazil, where they could clinch the WCC if Ferrari don't score 17 points or more.

"Mexico was a bittersweet weekend," explained Wolff. "We cannot be satisfied with our race performance in Mexico. Qualifying looked promising but just a few laps into the race, we knew that we'd run into big issues with the tyres.

"We started to analyse those problems immediately after the race and have made progress with understanding the challenges we faced and why.

"It's important to apply all our learnings to make sure we come back strong in Brazil."

Wolff insists it's important the team remains grounded for the final two events as they seek a fifth consecutive Constructors' and Drivers' double.

"Our target for this season was to win both Championships, not one title or the other, so our mindset is one of unfinished business as we head to São Paulo," he added.

"We have a big battle on our hands for the Constructors' title and we have lost ground to Ferrari in each of the past race weekends – even though we had the base performance to do better.

"This is the moment to keep our feet on the ground, focus clearly on the objective and trust in our processes and people to deliver.

"In the cockpit, I know that both Lewis and Valtteri are determined to end their respective seasons on a high note; as a team, we are aiming to finish this year with our heads held high and with two performances that properly reflect the level of performance we have attained this year."
