Force India intends to lodge an application to change its name for the 2019 Formula 1 season, according to team boss Otmar Szafnauer.
The Silverstone-based operation has been known as Force India since 2008, shortly after Vijay Mallya acquired it, having previously run under the Jordan, Midland and Spyker moniker.
Force India previously evaluated changing its identity but stuck with the same name for 2018.
Mallya’s involvement ended during the summer break when he was bought out by a group of investors led by Lawrence Stroll, whose Racing Point company was added to the entrant name
The Constructor name is nonetheless still ‘Force India’, but Szafnauer confirmed that plans are in motion to apply for a name change for 2019.
“I think in the last couple of years some of the considerations [of changing the name] were around selling the team and I think that bit of it is taken away,” he said.
“We’ve just got to come up with the right name that will last for a long time.”
Szafnauer added that “there are all sorts of possibilities” currently under consideration.
Any application will have to be approved by the Formula 1 Commission, with the initial 2019 entry list set to be published when the FIA World Motor Sport Council meets in December.
