Kimi Raikkonen recorded Formula 1's fastest ever lap time as he beat Juan Pablo Montoya's 2004 lap record at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza circuit to take his first pole position of the 2018 season.
Raikkonen's 1:19.119 was 0.406 seconds quicker than Montoya's lap and the Finn's first pole at Monza in 12 years.
The 38-year-old – F1's oldest polesitter since Nigel Mansell – led Sebastian Vettel by 0.161s as the German made a small error on his lap and also provided a slipstream for his team-mate.
Vettel's championship rival Lewis Hamilton held provisional pole on his first attempt, and although he improved on his second run, both Raikkonen and Vettel found more pace to crucially move ahead and secure 1-2 front-row lock-out.
Mercdes' Valtteri Bottas completes the second row, half a second down, with Max Verstappen and Romain Grosjean lining up fifth and sixth for Red Bull and Haas respectively.
Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll completed the top ten, with Stroll securing Williams' first Q3 appearance this year, much to the delight of team boss Claire Williams.
Kevin Magnussen missed out on a Q3 spot after he and McLaren's Fernando Alonso tangled at Turn 1. The pair were both on a quick lap as the Spaniard arrived into the corner alongside the Haas car, thanks to a tow down the start/finish straight.
Both Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo opted not to run as both are taking on new engine components and will therefore start at the back of the pack regardless of their qualifying position.
Sergio Perez was the shock loser in Q1 as he failed to escape the drop-zone by just 0.001, whilst Sauber's Charles Leclerc was baffled by his lack of pace as he qualified a lowly P17, again just 0.001 off Perez and therefore 0.002 shy of a Q2 spot.
McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne was slowest as the Belgian's struggles continue.
