Robert Wickens' #6 Lucas Oil SPM entry will not be entered into the next IndyCar race at Gateway for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in a statement released by the team on Tuesday.
The Canadian's car was heavily damaged in a devastating crash which caused a multi-car pile-up after connecting with Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter Reay in Turn 2 on Lap 7 during the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.
On Monday, Wickens underwent surgery at the Lehigh Valley Hospital to insert titanium rods and screws into his spine, though the statement released warned the severity of his injury still remains an unknown at this present moment.
Team-mate and compatriot James Hinchcliffe has been given clearance to drive his #5 Arrow Electronics entry at Gateway after being caught up in the aftermath of Wickens' accident.
There were initial concerns for him as he climbed out of his car having appeared to have hurt his wrists during the resulting collisions.
A statement from the SPM team read: “James Hinchcliffe, driver of the #5 Arrow Electronics Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda, who has been cleared to drive following an accident at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 19, will compete in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Gateway Motorsports Park this weekend.
“The No. 6 Lucas Oil SPM Honda will not be entered for the event."
