George Russell beats Lando Norris to Austrian pole position

George Russell snapped up pole position for Formula 2's Feature Race at Austria's Red Bull Ring, with the ART racer beating fellow British driver Lando Norris to the top spot by two-tenths of a second.

Mercedes-backed Russell posted two laps quick enough for pole, his best time a 1:13.541, as the expected rain held off, though dark clouds loomed above the Spielberg circuit.

Carlin's Norris ran wide at Turn 9, scuppering his final lap, costing him any shot at beating Russell, as just 0.044 split him and Carlin team-mate Sergio Sette Camara in third.

Russell's ART team-mate Jack Aitken will start from fourth to complete the second row, which comes on the back of the stewards handing him and Roy Nissany two penalty points after the pair made contact in practice.

Trident made a quick engine change on Arjun Maini's car ahead of the session which allowed him to post the fifth-quickest time ahead of Arden's Maximilian Gunther – his best performance all season. Charouz Racing's Louis Deletraz was seventh.

Alexander Albon suffered his worst qualifying this year having failed to qualify lower than third, and will start eighth after running wide on his first flying lap.

Nyck de Vries and Tadasuke Makino rounded out the top 10.
