Mercedes chief Toto Wolff wasn't a happy man following the conclusion of the Canadian Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton relinquished his championship lead to rival Sebastian Vettel, with the Ferrari driver dominating the event.
Mercedes performed poorly in Monaco a fortnight ago and were hoping to bounce back in Montreal where they've traditionally dominated, but with Vettel taking pole on Saturday and an easy victory on Sunday, that left Valtteri Bottas in the runner-up spot whilst Hamilton, who suffered an early power unit issue, finished fifth.
Although Mercedes retains the lead of the Constructors' Championship, Wolff dismissed suggestions that the result was "damage limitation" for the team.
"Not at all. It is a shit result for us," Wolff told ORF. "I have to describe it like that. It's a strong track for us, but all weekend long we did little mistakes, from the beginning.
"The only feeling I have is that we have to wake up. This is a track where we should have maximised points. It was not about performing damage limitation."
Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda applauded Ferrari's comeback following their own struggles in Spain and Monaco.
"We have to say that the Ferrari as a package is unbelievable. The car is fantastic and the engine – even on fuel consumption they have been going [like] hell all through the race.
"So I think we have to really work hard now."
Mercedes are due to bring an upgraded engine to the next round in France after initially being forced to delay it this weekend.
