Edoardo Mortara is doubtful that he will be able to race at the season-closing New York City E-Prix due to a calendar clash between Formula E and the DTM series.
Set to take place on July 13th and 14th, the New York City E-Prix shares its dates with the DTM's Zandvoort rounds – a championship that the Italian/Swiss racer competes in for Mercedes.
Earlier this season, Mortara missed the Berlin E-Prix and instead raced at the third and fourth rounds of the DTM at the Lausitzring, taking away one win from the weekend in the first of two races at the circuit in Eastern Germany.
As Formula E approaches the 10th round of Season Four this weekend with the all-electric single seater series heading to Switzerland for the inaugural Zurich E-Prix, Mortara currently lies in 11th in the Drivers' Championship with 29 points for Venturi.
"I don’t think so but you can never be sure," said Mortara when asked by Motorsport Week if he will be racing in New York.
"The championship is actually not going so bad in DTM. I had a bit of bad luck, a little bit of incidents but generally, it was going quite ok so I doubt that I will be in New York but you can never be sure in motorsport.”
After six races of the DTM series' 20 race-long season, Mortara sits in sixth in the standings with 47 points, 43 adrift of Timo Glock who currently leads.
Earlier this year, Mercedes boss, Ulrich Fritz, revealed that Mortara would only race in New York if he was in a poor position in the DTM series and that the touring car championship takes priority over anything else:
"If he is in a promising position in the DTM, he will not drive in New York. That is clear, because the DTM has priority," he told Autosport in March.
If Mortara does miss the double-header season finale in New York, this weekend's Zurich E-Prix could mark his last race in Formula E.
"It could potentially be [my last race]," he told Motorsport Week.
When asked about his future in Formula E, Mortara remained hopeful that he will stay on the grid for Season Five:
"I don’t know if I’ve made a big impact [in the championship] I had a good first weekend. I had some really good races lets say, I had also some awful qualifyings and in general, for me as a rookie it was a difficult season," he said.
"[I] had a lot to learn, these cars are very different to drive but for me I definitely proved that things are going well and I can have a quite good feeling with the car and I can be, for sure, one of the strong guys.
"I hope that I will have another shot at Formula E next year. Many things are happening especially here. Let’s see. Let’s see.”
If Mortara does miss the New York City E-Prix, it is unknown who will partner Maro Engel on the other side of the Venturi garage although Tom Dillmann is in a strong position after deputizing for the Swiss in Berlin.
