Spirit of Daytona Racing will start the 12 Hours of Sebring from pole position, after Tristan Vautier qualified fastest in team's Cadillac DPi-V.R.

Vautier set a time of 1:47.432s four minutes from the end of the 15-minute session, beating Olivier Pla in the #2 Nissan DPi by 0.160 seconds.

The Frenchman surged to the top of the timesheets after recovering from a brief excursion through the turn 10 grass on one of his early runs.

Vautier's result marked his second Sebring pole in as many attempts, following on from his record-breaking GTD class qualifying run aboard a Mercedes last year.

It also signified Spirit of Daytona's first IMSA pole since the 2015 Petit Le Mans.

Row two of the grid for the second round of the IMSA Sportscar Championship will be led by Acura Team Penske, based on Ricky Taylor's time of 1:47.773s.

Lining up next to Taylor's Acura DPi will be the sister Nissan, qualified by 2016 winner Pipo Derani.

Ex-Sauber Formula 1 driver Felipe Nasr registered the fifth quickest time in the #31 Action Express Cadillac, four tenths off Vautier's benchmark.

Sixth was the Acura driven by Juan Pablo Montoya, while Rene Rast slotted into seventh for Mazda.

In GT Le Mans, BMW notched up its first pole with the new M8 GTE, which made its debut at the Daytona 24 Hours in January.

Connor de Phillippi's early marker of 1:55.839s stood firm throughout the session, as the BMW Team RLL squad finished first and third.

Ferrari's James Calado came closest to eclipsing the former IndyCar driver, but the reigning World Endurance GT champion came up short by a tenth.

However, Calado did manage to prevent BMW from locking out the class front row, with the British driver relegating Jesse Krohn's M8 to the second row.

Rounding out the class top five were the two Ford GTs of Richard Westbrook and Joey Hand.

Pole honours in GT Daytona went to the Scuderia Corsa squad for the second race in a row, as Daniel Serra broke Vautier's 2017 class record by over a second.

The Brazilian backed up his Daytona qualifying exploits with another dominant run, turning in a final time of 1:58.710s after several improvements.

That ensured the Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 of a half-second advantage over the Land Motorsport Audi R8, driven by Christopher Mies.

The pair of Lexus RCF GT3s filled the next two places ahead of the Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3.

The 66th running of the Sebring 12 Hours will get underway tomorrow (Saturday, March 17th) at 10:40 local time (14:40 UK).
