With Liberty Media's plans to increase the Formula 1 calendar to 25 events in the near future, there has reportedly been interest from several countries looking to either join or return to the roster, including Vietnam and Turkey.

However one country, Argentina, looks set to return following a recent inspection of the Autodromo de Buenos Aires Juan y Oscar Galvez by the FIA's race director, Charlie Whiting.

Whiting visited the circuit, which is due to undergo a major renovation over the next few years, to advise circuit officials on what needs to be done to meet FIA and Formula 1 safety requirements to gain a Grade 1 license.

Members of the Buenos Aires government and representatives of both the Automovil Club Argentino and the Argentinean Drivers' Association accompanied Whiting on the visit to the circuit, which hosted grands prix between 1953 and 1998.

A return to Argentina has long been mooted, with Bernie Ecclestone keen to make it happen at a new venue in the resort of Mar del Plata, but that came to nothing due to a lack of finances.

But with the government now behind plans for a return to the Autodromo de Buenos Aires Juan y Oscar Galvez, it looks possible that it could soon materalise in the coming years, making it only the second South American race alongside Brazil.
