Raoul Hyman captured his maiden victory in GP3 with a controlled performance from pole position, resisting race-long pressure from Ferrari junior Giuliano Alesi at the Red Bull Ring.
Hyman led the field away and maintained a buffer back to Alesi throughout the 18-lap race; Alesi used DRS to close in on Hyman but, despite remaining within a second, was unable to pose a serious threat, enabling the Campos driver to register victory.
In a relatively processional encounter, the only move of note came on the penultimate lap, when Nirei Fukuzumi passed Ryan Tveter for third, but one lap later the biggest drama unfolded.
Dorian Boccolacci looked left and right while trying to pass Alessio Lorandi for seventh on the run to Turn 4 but misjudged the situation.
Boccolacci clipped Lorandi’s rear and was sent skywards, before landing, though the angle at which he entered the gravel pitched his Trident into a triple roll.
Boccolacci was mercifully able to clamber from the wreckage unscathed, while a damaged Lorandi dropped to eighth, behind Anthoine Hubert.
Race 1 victor George Russell came home sixth, behind ART team-mate Jack Aitken, as podium finisher Fukuzumi moved back into the lead of the standings, one point clear of Mercedes youngster and team-mate Russell.
