ESM Nissan leads Friday practice at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Extreme Speed Motorsports Nissan driver Ryan Dalziel set the pace during Friday practice for the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship's visit to Ontario.

Dalziel, who co-drives the #2 Nissan-Onroak DPi with Scott Sharp, submitted a time of 1:08.994s during the second of two sessions at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park circuit, out-pacing the WTR-entered Cadillac DPi of championship leader Ricky Taylor by 0.059 seconds.

The Scot's effort was enough to eclipse last year's pole position figure by just over a second, and was five seconds off the outright lap record set by an LMP1 Audi.

The Cadillac set the fastest lap during the morning run with Jordan Taylor behind the wheel, but better track conditions later in the day allowed the top five to supercede the earlier benchmark.

Third quickest on the day was Pipo Derani in the sister ESM Nissan-Onroak, which came to a halt late in FP2 with Johannes van Overbeek at the controls.

Van Overbeek lost control of the car, seemingly through a mechanical issue, and parked up on the side of the 2.5 mile circuit.

Three tenths of a second back in fourth was Dane Cameron in the #31 Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi, ahead of the JDC-Miller Motorsports ORECA 07-Gibson driven by Misha Goikhberg.

In GT Le Mans, the two Porsche 911 RSRs led the way with Laurens Vanthoor and Patrick Pilet locking out the sharp end of the class.

Vanthoor's time of 1:14.753s on a set of fresh tyres pipped Pilet by half a second, with the pair of BMW M6s following closely in third and fourth.

Antonio Garcia lapped fifth quickest in the points-leading Corvette C7.R, whilst the best of the Ford GTs finished sixth.

The fastest Prototype Challenge lap of the day came courtesy of Performance Tech Motorsports driver Patricio O'Ward, while Sage Karam led GT Daytona in the #14 Lexus RCF-GT3.

Of the GT Daytona runners, the #50 WeatherTech Racing Mercedes failed to take part in FP2 after Gunnar Jeanette crashed the car earlier in the day.

Class-by-class qualifying for Sunday's100-minute sprint takes place tomorrow (Saturday, July 8th) at 12:05 pm local time (UTC-5).
