Former Ferrari engineer Toni Cuquerella has joined the Campos Racing Formula 2 team in an advisory role.
Cuquerella, who was chief race engineer for Ferrari in 2015 and 2016, has been signed to lead the team “through its transition to the new F2 car” for next season.
Formerly known as GP2, the FIA F2 series will field a new car for the first time since 2011 and it will more closely resemble the more aggressive styling and aero of Formula 1’s current machines.
It will debut in 2018 and Campos has signed Cuquerella in an advisory role, to implement new technology and lead the F2 team as it moves to the new car.
Cuquerella was previously a race engineer for two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso in Euro Open by Nissan with Campos in 1999 and has since worked for a number of F1 teams.
These include Super Aguri, BMW Sauber, HRT and, most recently, Ferrari, and now he returns to Campos in F2.
The Spanish outfit has so far struggled in 2017. Ralph Boschung has been its sole regular driver through the opening four rounds.
In the second car, Stefano Coletti opened the season, before Roberto Merhi took over for a round. Robert Visoiu was then selected to race the remainder of the season.
Campos is currently ninth in the teams’ standings after four F2 rounds, with just two top 10 results so far.
