Neel Jani set the fastest time during free practice for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the Swiss driver edging out the second-placed Toyota by six tenths of a second.

A last-gasp 3:20.362s effort from Jani, who shares the #1 919 Hybrid with Andre Lotterer and Nick Tandy, sealed the order in the final five minutes of a sunny four-hour session at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Jani eclipsed the time set early in the final hour by Kamui Kobayashi, who later spun his Toyota at the final chicane.

The margin between the two drivers at the end was 0.604s, with Jani just over two seconds short of the pace set by Kobayashi at the official test day.

Third quickest in free practice was Earl Bamber, who slotted his Porsche 919 Hybrid under Kobayashi by a margin of 0.721 seconds, and over a second off the leader.

The 2015 Le Mans winner's best run of 3:21.687s was enough to eclipse the two other Toyotas, which rounded out the LMP1 hybrid order.

In LMP2, ORECA 07-Gibsons filled out the top ten places as Alex Lynn set the benchmark for G-Drive Racing.

Lynn's time of 3:30.363s gave the former Williams F1 tester a 1.3 second cushion to Mathias Beche in the next-placed car entered by Rebellion Racing.

Bruno Senna backed up Beche's marker in the sister Rebellion entry, with the pair of Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECAs completing the top five.

The fastest non-ORECA was the all-Russian SMP Racing Dallara driven by Victor Shaitar, which finished on a 3:34.507s.

Ferrari, Aston shine in GTE

GTE-Pro saw Ferrari and Aston Martin share out the top four places, with the former taking the fastest lap.

A 3:54.832s marker from Sam Bird gave the 6 Hours of Spa-winning Ferrari 488 a four tenths of a second advantage over the Aston Martin driven by Darren Turner.

Turner, who is competing in his 15th Le Mans, placed ahead of James Calado in the other Ferrari and Marco Sorensen in the sister Aston, which held the fastest lap for the opening half of the session.

Pedro Lamy recorded a 3:56.082s time in GTE-Am that put the Aston Martin driver in the mid-pack of the Pro field.

The session passed largely without incident, although the safety car did make an appearance during the second hour when Christian Philippon spun his Corvette into the barriers at Karting.

After a full assessment, the Larbre crew opted to repair the damage and sent the car back out to complete its laps.

An accident for the Villorba Corse LMP2 Dallara in the final 10 minutes resulted in the deployment of slow zones, but the safety car wasn't called for a second time.

Minor incidents also befell the GTE-Pro teams, with a puncture impeding the progress of the #95 Aston Martin and a brief trip across the Karting gravel slowing Michele Rugolo, who has come in as a late replacement for the injured Lucas di Grassi at Ferrari.

Qualifying for the 85th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is set to take place later today at 22:00 local time.
