Lucas di Grassi hails ‘great fight’ with Sebastien Buemi in Monaco

Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport driver Lucas di Grassi has hailed his battle with Sébastien Buemi during the Monaco ePrix as a “great fight”.

The Brazilian qualified second and dropped back slightly from Buemi in the first stint, before the field bunched up during the mid-race safety car and resulting pitstops.

He seemed to be quicker in his second car and had slightly more energy, closing in on Buemi with a few laps remaining.

Di Grassi was right behind the Renault e.dams at times but failed to find a way through, despite feeling he had the pace to beat Buemi.

“This was another great fight – both in qualifying and in the race,” he said. “We had a car we could have beaten Renault with.

“On the first stint the pace was not really there but we were saving much more energy. In the second stint, I had around one per cent more than him, so I knew if I had the right strategy I could attack him in the end.

“Unfortunately, the track in Monaco hardly offers any overtaking opportunities, plus Séb is a strong and experienced driver.

“I would never go for a gap where you cannot overtake or I would risk all the race, but if he’d left the door open just a little bit, I would no doubt have launched an attack.”
