Renault e.dams driver Sébastien Buemi set the pace in both practice sessions for the Monaco ePrix.

The current championship leader was quickest in a dramatic opening practice, which featured numerous incidents and off-track excursions.

Around the adapted Circuit de Monaco layout, Buemi put in a best time of 52.795 seconds to end the session fastest.

This was over half a second quicker than Buemi’s Monaco ePrix pole time from the inaugural race at the track back in 2015.

Nicolas Prost was second to make it a Renault e.dams one-two, four tenths behind his team-mate. Venturi’s Stephane Sarrazin and Felix Rosenqvist were next up.

José María López, who has been cleared to race after injuring himself in a FIA WEC crash at Silverstone, was fifth for DS Virgin Racing.

Rosenqvist caused a late red flag in the session after crashing into the back of a slowing Oliver Turvey at Turn 3.

Turvey was slowing for yellow flags and Rosenqvist’s Mahindra slammed into the rear of the NextEV NIO machine late in the session.

Buemi returned to the top spot in second practice with a 52.729 best lap, ahead of DS Virgin’s Sam Bird and championship rival Lucas di Grassi.

Jean-Éric Vergne was fourth for Techeetah, just under three tenths behind the pacesetter Buemi at the front of the field.

Drivers continued to struggle at the first corner, with numerous lock-ups and trips to the run-off area. López was fifth in FP2 as well, with Loïc Duval sixth.
