Ex-Formula One driver Karun Chandhok will return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year in the LMP2 category.

The 33-year-old, who made eleven starts with the HRT and Lotus teams in 2010 and 2011 is set to take part in the French endurance classic for the fifth time.

Chandhok will drive a Gibson-powered Ligier JSP217 run by British squad Tockwith Motorsports, sharing the car with Nigel Moore and Philip Hanson.

The Yorkshire-based team currently competes in the European Le Mans Series and finished fifth on its LMP2 debut at Silverstone last weekend.

Chandhok, Moore and Hanson were revealed on the provisional entry list for next month's Spa round of the World Endurance Championship, which the team will use as preparation for its first attempt at the 24-hours.

The last time Chandhok raced at Le Mans was in 2015, when he joined Irish outfit Murphy Prototypes in its LMP2 lineup.

He, Nathanael Berthon and Mark Patterson finished fifth in class on that occasion, bettering a sixth-place finish and a DNF with Murphy the previous two years.

Chandhok also made one appearance in the top category – LMP1 – driving a JRM-entered HPD with Peter Dumbreck and David Brabham in 2012.

LMP3 debut this weekend

Chandhok has also been confirmed as a driver in the inaugural round of the UK-based LMP3 Cup Championship, which takes place this weekend at Donington Park.

Sharing a Ligier JSP3-Nissan with former British GT regular Steve Tandy, Chandhok will be reunited with the T-Sport team that gave him an early opportunity in Formula 3 single seaters.

"Nice to be racing a T-Sport Racing car 13 years after I did F3 with them," said Chandhok on Twitter.

"Great guys! Helps me knock the rust off before Spa & Le Mans."

The LMP3 Cup Championship is a national-level feeder series for the Michelin Le Mans Cup, which supports the European Le Mans Series.

It is designed to provide a cost-effective starting point for teams wishing to pursue the prototype ladder in the hope of competing at Le Mans.
