GP2 is set to race at Spain’s Circuito de Jerez as a standalone event this year, Motorsport Week understands.
The series has traditionally held 11 rounds per season, predominantly in support of Formula 1 events, but the 2017 roster has not yet been finalised.
The absence of the Formula 1 German Grand Prix removes one venue compared to 2016, while Sepang, which returned last season, is unlikely to feature on the calendar.
Bahrain is set to return as the season opener, a position it held in 2014 and 2015 before being omitted from last year’s schedule.
A standalone round in Jerez, also featuring GP3, is expected to be slotted into the calendar, ostensibly between Formula 1-supporting events in Italy and Abu Dhabi, after an initial agreement was struck with the circuit.
GP2 has never raced at Jerez, though official pre-season test sessions have been held at the venue.
The other nine rounds of the 2016 calendar – Barcelona, Monaco, Baku, Austria, Britain, Hungary, Belgium, Italy and Abu Dhabi – are all set to be retained.
