Toto Wolff brands Nico Rosberg time penalty ‘complete nonsense’

Nico Rosberg's ten-second time penalty for causing a collision was "complete nonsense" according to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

Championship leader Rosberg had been battling with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and at the second corner he launched a move down the inside, which saw the pair make contact. Both escaped any damage and they eventually finished third and fourth respectively.

During the race, the stewards handed Rosberg a ten-second time penalty for the clash. Although it had no bearing on the result, with Rosbery comfortably finishing 13 seconds ahead, Wolff called it an unnecessary penalty.

"The penalty is just complete nonsense," he told media after the race.

"It's not what I want to focus on because we have let Lewis down and that should be something that we are beating ourselves up ourselves about, and not moaning about an unfair penalty that didn't make any difference because Nico was still third.

"But a couple of months ago we decided altogether that we wanted to allow the racing between all the cars and if it wasn't 100 per cent clear that someone was at fault then we would let them race against each other…and then this.

"I don't know, it is for others to comment and not my main priority after that race."
